Grief & Loss

The loss of a loved one while coping with the collective grief associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic can be overwhelming. The pandemic has changed our ability to congregate with loved ones and celebrate the lives of those we’ve lost. It has isolated us in a time when we may crave togetherness more than ever. Learning to cope with loss and find positive ways to channel your grief is vital to your mental and emotional health.

Learn to cope by taking some of the following actions:

  • Host video conference calls with family members

  • Ask friends and family members to share stories and updates through social media, mailed letters, e-mail, phone, or group messaging.

  • Seek out grief counseling, mental health services, or support groups.

Grief & COVID-19

Oftentimes, grief is not associated with a death. You may grieve your sense of self and the ways in which the pandemic has shaped your world. Whether it be loss of employment, of a sense of safety, of personal connections and freedom, or of financial security, it is important that you allow yourself to grieve healthily and fully.

For more info on the grieving process, and how you can overcome the sense of loss wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic, please visit the American Psychological Association’s website at: https://www.apa.org/news/apa/2020/04/grief-covid-19
