A one-of-a-kind program

MOM’s Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Program is a key part of the care MOM provides for its patients. The DSME program assists patients with understanding and managing their diabetes. The program offers weekly classes and one-on-one education and is managed by MOM’s volunteer Certified Diabetes Educator Chris Anderson.

MOM’s DSME Program achieved recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2016 and renewed its recognition in 2019. It is the only ADA-recognized DSME program in the nation that is volunteer-run and provides services to low-income, uninsured adults. On November 28, 2017, Governor Kay Ivey presented a Commendation to Medical Outreach Ministries for its service to the State of Alabama, specifically in the area of diabetes self-management education.

In Summer 2020, Chris Anderson, CDE, MS, RN published a diabetes handbook designed specifically for MOM’s patients. Printed copies of the handbook are available for patients, and an electronic copy may be downloaded below.
